Introduction to Lifetime Goals
Your lifetime goals are your gameplan for a successful life. Let’s get going on them then, shall we?
Introduction
It has taken us a long time to get to this point in the Afterburner Success Partners course. For the past 21 months, we’ve learned about the goal-setting process and how to develop financial, professional, and personal goals AND achievement plans. We’ve defined everything we want to do in life in these three goal categories. Now it’s time to put them all together in a lifetime goal plan. One that you designed specifically for you and you alone. Your own custom plan! How cool is that? Where else could you get something like this? Well, if I may say so, the answer is nowhere. It’s something you must do yourself, and now you’ve done it! Congratulations!
But we’re not done quite yet. We still have a lot to do to complete the project before we can put a bow in it. I’d like to describe what we will be doing over the next few sessions.
The lifetime goal AND achievement plan-your application to the 1% club
Completing the Lifetime Goal Plan is a big deal. A really big deal. It’s your application to the 1% club. Wait, what do you mean by application? Oh, well, as we’ve discussed, only 1% of the population writes down their goals and achieves them. So, now that you have written down all your goals, you can apply to the club. Later in life, when you achieve all of them, you will be granted entry. You will have arrived. Do you see why this is called a lifetime plan? It’s not a one-and-done. No sir, no way. It’s like a LEAN process; you are never really finished.
Now, I’m going to give you a little slack here. I’m going to say that once you have reached retirement, whatever age that is for you, either early or late, young or old, I’m going to say it’s OK to become a member of the 1% club. You are granted entry. Because at that point, you’ve essentially arrived. And because you will have made it that far, I have a very high confidence level you will live your retirement years just like you lived your working years. You will always be learning, doing, and helping others, just in a different form!
A look ahead
I’m going to give you a little insight into the next few sessions. Nothing really different than what you have already done with your financial, professional and personal goals. Except…The magnitude is a whole lot greater. This is your lifetime plan, and it’s now real. Once you complete the lifetime goal and accomplishment plan, the onus is on you to do the work. What, then? Achieve your dreams and live your best life! Here is what’s coming up:
Week 1 (today)-Description of what we are going to do to develop YOUR Lifetime Goal Plan.
Week 2-Goal and achievement process review.
Week 3-The priority matrix for lifetime goals.
Week 4-Completing the Lifetime Goal Template.
Following weeks-Discussion of how to overcome problems, conflicts, and obstacles as they come up.
Considerations before completing the Lifetime Goals Template
Here is what we will be doing in the next few sessions, as noted above. You will gather each of your financial, professional, and personal goals. Later, we will integrate them into one document that will become your guide to fulfilling your dreams and living your best life. So you can be happy and successful. Your completed life goals template will likely exceed one page. I mean, hey, you have a lot you want to do! No grass growing under your feet!
We will discuss this further in the next session, but I’d like you to start thinking about how you will integrate everything you wish to do into a single document. Just think about it. Ponder it. Use your quiet time to reflect and consider what you want the rest of your life to look like. Pray about it. Don’t try to do it now, we are just in the preliminary stage at the moment.
Oh, and there is a very important item I want to point out that is beyond the scope of this class. That item is what your projected spending will be in retirement. Frankly, in many cases, your retirement spending will equal what you have as income. For me, what happened is that, being very conservative as I am, I overestimated my spending and underestimated my projected investment value. This is a great place to be and was a result of a few fortunate events, the biggest being the market performance from 2009-2021. We will touch on the subject later, but as you remember, I always advise seeking professional help on big-ticket items like this if you are not sure what you should be doing. This is a pretty important topic and you want to be sure you get it right.
In a few sessions, what you will have accomplished is really quite amazing. Think how few people really do something like this! To that point, you are a step ahead of most people. Remember what we said in the beginning? Less than 3% of people even write their goals down. You are already in the top 3% of the population who achieve their goals. To be happy and successful. To achieve your dreams and live your best life! Now we’re going to define the path to the 1% club.
Ok, so I don’t want to ruin the moment, but I do want to interject a dose of reality here and now is the time to do it as you complete your lifetime goals template. You WILL be retired one day. As I mentioned, your spending will likely mirror your income, at least that is how it is for most people.
Even better, act conservatively now so that when you do reach that point, you are full of joy and enjoy the best years of your life. But to do that, you must work hard now.
I personally know folks who are very limited in what they can do in retirement because they did not plan during their working years. We’ve all heard the stories of unfortunate people who must choose between buying needed medication and food. You may even have heard stories of people who were forced to sell their homes because they could not afford them. Or get a reverse mortgage so they can stay in them, all the while depleting their wealth. You don’t want to do that.
What you want to do is live your best life and leave a legacy to your children and grandchildren. So please think carefully about this issue as you complete your lifetime goals template and don’t forget to take into account your later years in life.
That’s all for this week!
