Time to Celebrate!
We are almost to the end of our journey together. Time to celebrate!
Introduction
We will wrap up our course in blog post format in two weeks, with a few final thoughts and a summary review. For today, it’s time to celebrate!
The importance of celebration
I hope you take time to celebrate the big and small things. For many years, when Diane and I were both working, we would celebrate the end of the workweek by picking up a to-go pizza and watching a movie on Friday night at home. It was something we both enjoyed and an acknowledgment of the end of a difficult week. Believe me, our jobs were difficult, and by Friday, we needed a couple of days to wind down.
At one of my jobs, we had a monthly luncheon. The company catered lunch for everyone, and we talked about what had gone well (and not so well) for just a brief few minutes. It was a great time to enjoy a meal together and get to know each other better. It was a lot of fun, and everyone enjoyed it.
These are good examples of celebrating small things. What examples can you think of that you do, or perhaps should be doing?
Then there are the bigger things that we should celebrate, such as the end of this course. We’ve been at this for well over two years, and if you have stayed with me, you really have accomplished something and have a great reason to celebrate. We’ll wrap it up formally in a couple of weeks, but I’d like to talk about why it’s important to celebrate. Not just for completing this course, but as a matter of practice in life. Celebrations provide psychological, emotional, and performance benefits more than just a great time. Let’s check out some of the reasons we celebrate:
Reinforces Success and Builds Motivation- When we celebrate, our brains link effort, achievement, and reward. This reinforcement makes us more likely to stay motivated and willing to tackle the next challenge with confidence that we can be successful, and that we will be rewarded
Provides Closure: Projects often demand intense focus and energy. If you’ve ever participated in a LEAN/Six Sigma event, you will recognize the benefit of the Friday morning closeout meeting. A celebration creates a clear endpoint, helping us avoid burnoutand providing a fresh mindset for the next task. Without closure, people tend to carry stress forward, and tasks never get done. Have you ever experienced projects that never seem to get completed?
Boosts Morale and Confidence-Taking time to recognize what you accomplished reminds our team and us that we did something meaningful and we are capable of success. This confidence tends to compound over time, improving future performance.
Strengthens Relationships-When we celebrate with others, we build camaraderie, create shared positive memories, and increase trust and teamwork. People who celebrate wins together tend to collaborate better later. If you have ever been in the military, you know the value of going TDY (temporary duty) together in building relationships. If you are in business, it’s the same for business travel or special projects. We get to know people much better than just doing routine work with them.
Encourages Reflection and Learning-Celebration naturally creates a pause point where you can reflect on what worked well or what we would do differently next time. The finished project is thus turned into a learning experience, not just a completed task. This is exactly the purpose of the previously mentioned Friday LEAN/Six Sigma report out. Another process is the After Action Review (AAR). Click on the link in Note 1 to learn more about AAR’s, or simply Google it, and you will get a lot of information.
Reduces Stress and Prevents Burnout-When weconstantly move from one goal to the next without acknowledgment, it leads to fatigue. Celebration allows us to decompress and recharge mentally and emotionally
Builds a Culture of Achievement-No matter if in a business, team, or personal life, celebrating wins creates a mindset that progress matters, effort is valued, and success is recognized. This is a culture that drives long-term success.
Summary
Celebration isn’t about indulgence—it’s about reinforcement, recovery, and readiness for the next hill to climb. Find a way that is meaningful for you to celebrate and invite people you love and care about, such as your spouse, family, or maybe a few close friends, to help you acknowledge all you have done. You deserve it!
That’s all for this week!
Let’s help our friends and loved ones, shall we?
